Progress overtimeFor my painting i knew that i wanted to do something in relation to the beach. So i chose this really pretty picture that i took at Carolina Beach this past summer, while the sun was setting. The reason i chose to paint this picture is because like many people the beach is where i'm happiest. I also really love the beach because its where my family always meets for trips and every time we do wonderful memories are made. So i wanted to paint something that really showed connection to happy times and a reminder of what means the most to me. What i found most challenging about this piece was trying to get the sunset right. It took me most of the time to get each color closest to what the picture looked like, using gradient techniques to fix the sunset together. I think the most successful part of my piece is the "palm trees", i found it very easy to fix up the style of the tree because if you messed up it actually blended together nicely to form the shape of the tree and leaves. The process of my painting started with the blue back round which set the tone for the color of the sky in my painting. Second, i started setting a base for how the sunset would form and eventually started blending the purples and pinks together to make it look more realistic. After i finished the sunset i could set a basis of how the purple ish clouds looked, for this i used water and a dash of purple and lightly stroke my brush to make the oddly shaped clouds. Lastly, i could paint my trees in which i used black paint and used my brush to make the shape of leaves of a palm tree. i thought this went very well and made the sunset really pop. Above is the original picture i took at Carolina Beach.

The most helpful warm up for me was the pen cubes warm up we did. It helped me learn the different ways to add contrast and make the image pop on my pen drawing, even if it didn't turn out how i wanted to. Composition: the way a mixture of something is made up. Value: the importance or worth of an object.
The pros for the pencil drawing is that it is really easy to sketch out your object, and the pencil is really useful when it comes to forming highlights on your piece. A con for the pencil drawing is that it can be difficult to blend your different shades together. For my pen drawing some pros are that making your drawing creative with different designs is easy to come up with. A con for pen is that its hard to cover up your mistakes and evaluate off of them. Another is that forming shading and highlights can be hard if you are new at using a pen for drawing. And lastly for my charcoal drawing, some pros are that is you make a mistake you can blend it back to fit with your back-round. Its also convenient when you want to make shades on your object. Some cons are that when you use a dark charcoal it can be hard to get rid of it if you put a lot for say a shadow, other than that i would say that charcoal is the easiest to work with. The reason i chose Jonathan Higbee as my Inspiring Artist is because i myself really enjoy taking pictures of things that are not posed and are perfect. I like pictures that are taken in the moment because it shows how natural the world around us is. What makes his pictures so cool is that they are kinda unusual and match up when you wouldn't expect them to. Coincidences like this really fascinate me because most people wont realize this is happening all the time. |
